Why Do My Children Have To Visit The Dentist?

Creating good oral hygiene habits and health within childhood will help keep and teach those oral health habits correct for adulthood, preventing dental issues as your child gets older and keeping healthier teeth and gums. It is important and much easier to teach good dental habits to children at an early age so that they keep good habits for the rest of their lives.

Unfortunately, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, over half of the children that are aged 6 have tooth decay in their mouths, this is why it is so important for children to practice good dental health.

For your child’s first visit, your dentist will do a regular check-up to identify how their jaw and teeth are growing, the dentist will then check the teeth and gums to see how healthy they are.

Your dentist will then be able to accurately discuss with you and your child to give any advice on hygiene habits for your child, how to prevent cavities and the effects of healthy food on their teeth.

When Should My Child Start To Visit A Dentist?

It is commonly mistaken that children should see a children dentist once they have a full mouth of teeth appeared. However, the appropriate timing for your child to have their first visit to a dentist, is when their first teeth start to appear, or generally once they reach 12 months old. It is ideal that your child visit a dentist within this age frame so that a dentist can evaluate and go over a few key points about your childs teeth. Such as:

It is recommended that your child then starts regularly seeing their dentist every 6 months. This is very beneficial for both children and parents to help them get used to their dental visits and maintain good oral hygiene skills to keep for life.
